I'm attaching both the virtual machines logs and a screenshot of my HD's partitions, hopefully somebody might find that useful to understand what's gone wrong. When imaging my HD I only imaged the partitions which were strictly necessary for Windows, I didn't include my Data partition or the Hewlett Packard Recovery Partition. I'm wondering if I did something wrong when creating the VHD/VMDK because it looks like the virtual hard disks are not bootable. I tried several combinations of settings (IO/APIC on and off, IDE and SATA controller) and even tried to turn on the EFI feature (in this case Virtualbox crashes).

I used both Macrium Reflect and VMware vCenter Converter to image my OS and created two virtual HDs, a VHD and a VMDK, but when I create a new VM and try mounting the virtual hard disks the VM fails to boot.Īll I have is a black screen and a 'FATAL: no bootable medium found' message. I use Virtualbox both in Windows and Ubuntu hosts but to keep it simple I'm having problems with Virtualbox running on a Win8 hosts (the same host I'm trying to image). I'm planning to use this VHD to create a virtual machine with Virtualbox. Step 1: Right click on the virtual machine that isn’t a bootable state and click on settings.I am trying to create a VHD (or a similar format image) from a Win8 64bit which came pre-installed on my new notebook (it's an OEM license so I don't have the OS installation discs). If you are not sure which of the 2 reasons apply to you, I can show you a solution that covers both, and finally stop receiving the error message. VirtualBox works without any problems when a SATA storage device points to a virtual hard drive, but this is not the case for a bootable iso. Another issue can be appeared, if you mount accidentally the bootable iso to a SATA storage device controller instead of IDE. The CD/ DVD storage device controller is configured as SATA.If you mount a bootable iso before you start your virtual machine, you will be successful booting up the system. When you create a virtual machine for a first time, you need to mount a bootable iso like Ubuntu. VirtualBox doesn’t point to an operating system, either a mounted iso or a virtual hard disk with a bootable OS.There are two main reasons behind this issue: What causes this “Could not read from the boot medium” error? Note: This problem has to do purely with VirtualBox, and can be experienced on any host operating system be it Windows, Mac OS or Linux. This error is more common when trying to start a new virtual machine, but it is not impossible to happen at an existing virtual machine if the virtual hard drive is missing. Many VirtualBox users have experienced at least once the message ‘FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted.‘ Sometimes it is also shown ‘ No Bootable Medium Found! System halted‘.
